Solar PPA for schools & education in Cardiff

Welsh schools have their own funding map — and a PPA sits beside it

In Wales the first stop is usually the Welsh Government Energy Service or a Business Wales loan through the Development Bank of Wales, and Cardiff's One Planet Cardiff programme frames the city's 2030 net-zero ambition. A power purchase agreement is the option that needs none of those pots to move forward: a developer carries the cost of a 50–250kWp array on the school roof, and the school pays only for the electricity generated, fixed at 13–17 p/kWh.

Why the roof, and why now

Cardiff schools tend to sit on the large, simple roofscapes typical of Welsh post-war and modern builds — good solar territory. Under a PPA the developer owns and maintains the system, so a governing body carries no installation bill and no repair risk. With commercial energy spend across the city averaging around £45,000, a locked generation tariff is a hedge worth having against grid prices that have proved anything but stable.

The summer gap, handled

The catch with any education site is seasonal: panels do their best work over the summer holidays, when a school is closed. A Cardiff PPA deals with this by exporting unused generation under the Smart Export Guarantee, feeding back onto National Grid Electricity Distribution's South Wales network. During term, the daytime draw from classrooms, halls and kitchens soaks up most of what the roof makes.
